A is for Art
Just over an hour from our Derry home, Northern Ireland’s longest running arts festival is in full swing. Spread over three weeks, Belfast International Arts Festival celebrates contemporary arts practices in all its forms - from film to music, visual arts, theatre and dance.
At Smyth & Gibson, we frequently find ourselves looking to the art world for inspiration when it comes to designing our collections. Our interest in the art world is wide-reaching; expressionist, abstract, impressionist, contemporary, post modern, fine art photography…
What we choose to take from each artwork differs almost every time. The hue of a red check recalls the vibrant red pigments used by British artist Anish Kapoor in his beguiling sculptures. For the puckered surfaces of our summer seersuckers, the turbulent seas of a Wolfgang Tillmans photograph informed colour and texture and the saturated colours of American abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko were called upon for our heavy Irish linen wear in crayola red and amber yellow.
And of course, there is always Liberty. A customer favourite, our Liberty print collections who like their art right where they can it see.
